Nauto’s $159M Series B round in July, the largest equity deal since 2012, saw participation from a variety of auto incumbents including BMW, General Motors, and Toyota. Nauto develops V2X technology that’s currently used in connected cars to detect collisions and track driver behavior. The company plans to use this round of funding to develop V2X technology for autonomous vehicles.

A number of auto incumbents are also co-invested in Peloton Technology, a fleet telematics startup developing V2X technology used in truck platooning. DENSO, Magna, and Volvo all participated in the company’s $60M Series B round. The deal also saw participation from industrial (Lockheed Martin) and logistics (UPS) players.

Kymeta Corporation is a satellite communications company based in the United States. The company has received funding of $218M. The company is commercialising a new meta material based satellite antenna for connected cars.

TTTech is an aerospace company which provides solutions which improve the safety and reliability of networked electronic systems in the transportation and industrial segments. The company has received a funding of €125M.

Autotalks chipsets offer the most advanced, secure V2X, vehicle to vehicle communication and V2i/V2x/V2v technology for autonomous connected vehicles. It is a fabless semiconductor company that provides V2X VLSI solutions.

Veniam builds city-scale networks for connected vehicles that expand wireless coverage and bring terabytes of physical data to the cloud. The company has got funding $27M.

ACQUISITIONS

Ford has committed to deploying C-V2X in all new U.S. vehicle models beginning in 2022, “pending a technology neutral regulatory environment.” In its Sustainability Report 2018/19, Ford said that every new car it makes “in the United States will soon be able to tap into a wireless network and “talk” directly to other vehicles, pedestrians and infrastructure, helping to make our streets safer and less congested.” It also plans to begin deploying C-V2X technology in Ford vehicles in China in 2021.

GM Acquires Cruise

GM purchased Cruise, a software firm that it believes would aid in the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology.

Harman Acquires Savari

Samsung’s subsidiary, HARMAN International acquired Savari, an automotive technology firm designing V2X technology for 5G Edge and automotive applications.

Woven Acquires Lyft

Woven Planet, a subsidiary of Toyota acquired Lyft self-driving division. The transaction includes non-exclusive commercial agreements to accelerate the development and enhance the safety of automated driving technology.

COLLABORATIONS

Deutsche Telekom and Skoda Auto : Deutsche Telekom has announced C-V2X tests together with Skoda Auto in Czech as part of the European C-Roads project11.

China mobile & Huawei : China is at the forefront of the deployment of C-V2X5. There are more than 20 trials and pilot projects taking place across 100km of roads in 10 provinces. In Wuxi, in eastern Jiangsu province, C-V2X already covers 170 square km of urban land.

BMW and China Unicom : Moreover, BMW China has teamed up with China Unicom to test autonomous cars using 5G networks.

Telstra and Lexus Australia : Australia’s first on-road trials of C-V2X are underway in Victoria as part of the state government’s 'Towards Zero' programmed to improve road safety6. The Advanced Connected Vehicles Victoria (ACV2) project is led by mobile operator Telstra and automaker Lexus Australia. Having tested C-V2X on controlled tracks, on-road testing is now taking place on metropolitan and regional roads in the state.

Qualcomm & Audi, ford, Ducati : At the CES 2019 event in January, chipset maker Qualcomm demonstrated its C-V2X platform with Audi and Ford vehicles, as well as Ducati motorcycles7. The demos included vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-pedestrian and vehicle-to-infrastructure safety scenarios: The V2V use case featured the “intersection movement assist” scenario, which is designed to avoid angle collisions at intersections, while the V2P scenario showed how C-V2X can be used to protect vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and bicyclists.

Bosch, Huawei, and Vodafone : In Europe, Bosch, Huawei, and Vodafone Germany have successfully tested C-V2X on the A9 freeway in Bavaria, Germany. They used a pre-standard 5G network in combination with Bosch’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) driver-assistance system
